The Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre occupies a beautifully restored heritage building. The building itself is an attraction. It has been moved on four occasions during it’s 125 years. It was originally constructed for the Queensland National Bank in 1880 on the land now occupied by the present day City Hall. When the National Bank required larger premises they sold the wooden one story building to the Union Bank. Since 1996 it has been used as the Visitor Information Centre.

A short film tells the story of how ‘The World’ came to Charters Towers following the discovery of gold. Visitors can also take an interactive virtual tour of the city using the touch screen and read one of the many factual storyboards placed within the centre.

The Centre has an adjoining Orientation Room and its here visitors get their first taste of the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail. The trail explores the landscapes and colourful tales of the four G’s: from the discovery of Gold at the foot of Towers Hill, the Grandeur of the historic One Square Mile, the Greed in the hearts of those trying to win it big at the Stock Exchange.
