The Fly Point-Halifax Park Aquatic Reserve was declared in January 1983.

This reserve lies between Fly Point and Nelson Head, it extends from the mean high watermark to 500 metres off shore. A small area between the two jetties at Little Beach is not included in the reserve.

The reserve was established for the protection of all marine plants and animals, therefore you can only observe. Within the reserve you cannot fish, destroy marine life, collect any marine organisms (whether dead or alive) and this includes empty shells.

Fly Point and Halifax Park: for the snorkeler or scuba diver, these shallows reveal a rich variety of fish moving amongst the seagrass beds or between the boulders that layer the seabed.

Fly Point: the dive at Fly Point drops down in a series of ledges.

Halifax Park: on entering the water at Halifax park the seabed slopes gently to a ledge at 6 metres then drops rapidly to about 18 metres. At this depth three large bommies emerge from the sand. Hovering over these bommies are schools of bullseyes, mados, one-spot pullers and an occasional blue groper.
Like Fly Point these bommies are encrusted with a diversity or marine organisms.

Each summer, juvenile tropical fish appear including, butterfly fish, damsel Fish, wrasses and the butterfly cod.
